Synthesis prices over the last 9 years

Back

I have been ordering DNA for ~9 years now. I thought it would be good to reflect on how it has developed over the last 9 years.

Below I have 3 orders. One I placed in 2012 with Genscript ($0.35/bp), one was placed in 2014 with Gen9 ($0.20/bp), and one is Twist's pricing today ($0.09/bp). If we take these as DNA synthesis price, as it looks to consumers, it means that DNA synthesis halves in cost approximately every 5 years. It appears that the leaps in pricing normally occur due to a new entrant in the field. For example, in the 2018 SEC filings, Twist said their clonal pricing was $0.09/bp, and that pricing has not changed since. While they dropped prices upon entry, they were happy to sit at that price point for at least 3 years.

Dear Keoni,

Thanks for your interest in GenScript.

Attached please find the formal quote #1060771 for your project. Please double check the sequence and let me know whether I have followed your instruction correctly. By placing the order, you will be deemed read and approved the sequences and the order will be processed without further confirmation.

We provide you $0.35/bp for regular genes less than 3kb. The typical turnaround time is 10-15 working days.

Please kindly note that HindIII enzyme site has been added flanking your sequence. And when the project is done, we could provide you gb file instead of ape file for you. Is it OK fo you? By the way, could you please provide us your shipping and billing address?

**If you would like to proceed with ordering, please email (preferably)/fax to us a formal PO form issued by your institute (with the total price and quote number shown) or call us with credit card information. Please let us know when the PO is sent to avoid any delays.

Should you have any question, please feel free to contact me.

Best Regards,

Julia

Gen9 2014-07-03

Note: I was ordering with Andreas Stürmer, a fantastic DIY biologist I was working with.

Hello Andreas,

Thank you for contacting Gen9, sorry for the delay, I was on holliday.

We offer:
GeneByte (1.0kb-3.0kb priced at $0.20 or less)
GeneBits (0.5kb-1kb priced at $0.20 or less)
GeneByte Plus (3.0kb-10.0kb priced at $0.28 or less)

All of the above are sequence-verified, clonal constructs but our smallest order is 20kb.

I have some discretion on the smallest order if that would help you get going with Gen9.

We are geared up for massive and parallel synthesis on a chip, not orders for 1,2 or 3 small genes

Our standard vector is pBR322 and we can also deliver in any customer supplied vector for this and then we charge $129 per gene or obviously straight chain ds DNA.

Our turn around time is 20 working days irrespective of the size or number of constructs.

I have attached our design guidelines that can answer many frequently asked questions and gene submission form.

Once you complete and return the gene submission form, I can run it through our bioinformatics, generate a report and give accurate formal quotations.

All of the above is free of charge and without any obligation.

Hope this helps?

Regards,

Derek
